Women With a Vision, Inc. is excited to partner with Patois: The New Orleans International Human Rights Film Festival for their very first screenings of the year, a weekend of films by Lizzie Borden. These screening are part of Patois’ Community Film Series, a string of free film screenings focused on social justice issues. The filmmaker Lizzie Borden will be in attendance for the events.
The series will kick off on Friday, November 14th, 2014 with “Born in Flames,” the 1983 documentary-style feminist science fiction film directed by Lizzie Borden that explores racism, classism, sexism, and heterosexism in an alternative United States socialist democracy. The film will be followed by a discussion with filmmaker Lizzie Borden, facilitated by WWAV’s Policy & Communications Director Desiree Evans, and conclude with WWAV Board Member Laura McTighe speaking on WWAV’s new oral history project! This screening will take place at 1222 N. Dorgenois Street at the Gaudet Hall in St. Luke’s Episcopal Church from 7-10 PM. This event is co-sponsored by Wildseeds: The New Orleans Octavia Butler Emergent Strategy Collective and Women with a Vision.
Following this, on Saturday November 15th, 2014, Patois will screen “Working Girls,” a 1986 independent film directed by Lizzie Borden, depicting a day in the life of sex workers in Manhattan. This screening will take place at the Zeitgeist Theater (1618 Oretha Castle Haley) from 7-10 PM. Borden will also be in attendance for this event, with discussion facilitated by Elizabeth Steeby of UNO. This screening is co-sponsored by the New Orleans Sex Worker Outreach Project (SWOP).
