Join Us in the Fight

The Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, leaving birthing people in Louisiana without access to abortion care. Women with a Vision and our partners will continue advocating for the bodily autonomy and ultimate liberation of Black women and birthing people, poor folks, and the LGBTQ+ community. Sign up for updates on how to get involved.

The Thrive Study

The Thrive Study was authored with two purposes – understanding the factors 6th Ward residents consider when deciding whether or not to call the police and understanding what resources, services, and infrastructure would increase safety. Women with a Vision hopes that this report will help equip its readers to advocate for themselves and their communities at a hyperlocal level to advance safety, health, well-being, and equity as we work toward a more just future.

RACIAL JUSTICE & ENVIRONMENTAL JUSTICE

On December 10, 2021, Columbia University’s Global Health Justice and Governance Program (GHJG) in partnership with SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective and Women with a Vision hosted an interdisciplinary convening on reproductive and environmental justice in the U.S. The meeting, held in New Orleans months after Hurricane Ida and the day Mississippi versus Jackson was argued at the Supreme Court, was historic. More than 40 researchers, community-based activists, and donors convened to discuss the connections between environmental justice and reproductive justice and how advocates and scientists can be better aligned to improve health outcomes. The discussion focused on maternal mortality and preterm birth in Louisiana and Mississippi among Black and Brown women—states with the worst records of maternal and infant outcomes in the nation—to ask why environmental drivers of these glaringly bad trends are understudied and discounted.

This document provides highlights from that discussion including preliminary suggestions for future areas of focus. Details of the individual panels are provided in Appendix I; suggestions from breakout groups are provided in Appendix II; and a full list of participants is provided in Appendix III. We gratefully acknowledge the support of the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Philanthropies and the David and Lucile Packard Foundation.

Get to know us and the work that we do!

In 1989, a group of Black women operating out of an RV set out to address the HIV epidemic among women of color in Louisiana. They called themselves “Women With A Vision.” Over the last 30 years, the 11 women behind WWAV have become a force to be reckoned with. We took the fight for abortion rights to the Supreme Court, fought to overturn a 200-year-old law that discriminated against sex workers, and that’s just the beginning. The secret to our impact? Meeting marginalized women where they are and working together to get to the root of the problem. All of us at WWAV have a vision of a more just South, and are proof of all that’s possible when you never lose sight of community, equity, and liberation.
