Today is Give OUT Day, the national day of giving for the LGBTQ community – a 24-hour online fundraising campaign that unites the LGBTQ community nationally to raise critically needed funds to support the diverse array of LGBTQ nonprofits including advocacy groups, community centers, arts groups, organizers, clinics, student clubs, sports leagues, and more.
This has been another exciting year at Women With a Vision, Inc. We recently held our first meeting of The Black LGBTQ Action Coalition (BLAC), a partnership between Women With a Vision and Mississippi In Action to organize Black LGBTQ people throughout Louisiana and Mississippi in advocating for HIV/AIDS awareness, accessible healthcare, civil rights, and against health disparities affecting African-Americans and LGBTQ people in the US South.
We also continue to hold our Girls With a Pearl events, which have become safe spaces for transgender women to gather. The monthly meetings combine conversation, dinner, and story sharing to talk about health, justice, and survival.
As New Orleans’ only queer Black women-led organization, WWAV has been speaking our truth and fighting for LGBTQ health for more than 25 years. Many of the women and LGBTQ people that WWAV supports bear the scars of the war on drugs, mass incarceration and mass criminalization, systemic poverty, HIV/AIDS, and state and interpersonal violence. Please stand beside us as we stand beside our communities, fighting for health, justice, and safety.
