This Black History Month, Planned Parenthood celebrated 98 leaders, who they called “dream keepers,” from the African Diaspora on their website.
Women With a Vision’s Executive Director Deon Haywood was honored in their “Do’er” list — for being a leader on the front line of the movement for social change.
According to Planned Parenthood, “[Do’ers] educate Americans about the new health care law plans, advocate for the rights of those with HIV/AIDS, and address the social conditions of marginalized people. These Doers are essential for increasing opportunity and health care access in the black community.” Of the “dream keepers” they also said: “Whether they are whispering, singing, preaching, writing, or rallying for justice, their work helps us connect to each other. Their leadership inspires us to break down barriers to health care and opportunity posed by poverty, racism, and sexism.”
Women With a Vision is proud to celebrate the work and legacy of Deon Haywood and her more than thirty years of community organizing and leadership in Louisiana, working at the intersections of HIV/AIDS, harm reduction, LGBTQ rights, reproductive justice, and criminalization.
Congratulations Deon!
