On Wednesday, November 6th, 2013, WWAV’s Executive Director, Deon Haywood, will be joining formerly incarcerated activists, Susan Burton and Tina Reynolds, and scholar/activist, Beth Ritchie, for a focused conversation on the impact of incarceration on women and what centering gender teaches us about the carceral state.  Melissa Harris-Perry is moderating!

Women are currently the fastest growing group of incarcerated persons in the United States, but most scholarship on prisons focuses on men.  This panel will investigate the impact of the increasing incarceration of women, with a focus on the compounding effect it has on their communities. The panel will also discuss how the study of incarceration changes when we center gender in our investigation.
Moderator:

Melissa Harris-Perry, host of MSNBC’s “Melissa Harris-Perry Show,” director of the Anna Julia Cooper Project, and professor of political science at Tulane. She previously served on the faculties of the University of Chicago and Princeton University, and is the author of Sister Citizen: Shame, Stereotypes, and Black Women in America.
Panelists:
Susan Burton is the founder and executive director of A New Way of Life Reentry Project, that gives female parolees tools for rebuilding their lives after prison and advocates nationally for such support.
Deon Haywood is the executive director of Women With a Vision, a social justice organization that address issues faced by women within the New Orleans community and region, founded by and for women of color.
Tina Reynolds is the founder of Women on the Rise Telling Her Story (WORTH), an organization of currently and formerly incarcerated women that gives them a voice and support system. Tina is herself formerly incarcerated.
Beth Richie is the director of the Institute for Research on Race and Public Policy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, as well as the author of Arrested Justice: Black Women, Violence and America’s Prison Nation.
